2007 Update

During 2005 and 2006, teams from our synod lived and worked at the farm/safe haven named Mt. Horeb near the small town of Talanga in central Honduras. Team members enjoyed working beside our Honduran brothers and sisters to assist in readying the campus. Mt. Horeb has the potential to offer a fresh start for those living in deepest poverty. It will be a place for residents to develop skills, knowledge and confidence.
Three back-to-back groups, one large team of 75, stayed and worked at Mt. Horeb between February 15 - March 25, 2007. Highlights include . . .

  • The first group offered a free dental clinic to people living in the area and an overnight Bible school for children living in a local orphanage. This group, like the others, deepened ties between our synod and the Lutheran Church in Honduras (Iglesia Cristiana Luterana de Honduras). They offered a four-day theological training retreat for pastors and lay leaders from ministry site all over the country. To learn more, click here.
  • The group that served at Mt. Horeb between Feb. 27 - March 8 included three doctors, several nurses and many helpers who offered medical clinics for the poorest of the poor. They partnered with local medical leaders to offer care for men, women and children. About 1,200 people were seen during the five clinic days. This was the second medical team our synod has offered to the people of Honduras. To learn more click here.
  • Group three joined community leaders in organizing special activities for school children - races, special learning sessions and fun. Due to generous donations from people around the synod, two large shipping containers arrived at Mt. Horeb during the third group's stay. Group members distributed thousands of diapers to local hospitals/clinics and school desks and supplies to area schools. The shipping containers also included items for the bakery and sewing center that are being established at Mt. Horeb.

Each group spent time in daily prayer and worshiped together with and our Honduran brothers and sisters in a variety of settings. Fun and warm relationships are created and enjoyed.
All groups assisted in the needed progress at Mt. Horeb such as making blocks for additional buildings, paving sidewalks, updating water supplies, building furniture. This important work continues even when we're not there. Click here to find out more.
